Frequently Asked Questions

What is dialysis?

Dialysis is the treatment for kidney failure that removes waste and extra fluid from the blood by using a filter. In hemodialysis (HD) the filter is a plastic tube filled with millions of hollow fibers called a dialyzer. In peritoneal dialysis (PD) the filter is the lining of the abdomen, called the peritoneum.

What are the home dialysis options?

There are two options for home dialysis. The first is home-assisted hemodialysis (HD) and the second is patient-trained peritoneal dialysis (PD). With HD, one of our certified and licensed nurses would come to your home three times a week to dialyze you. With PD, we train you, the patient, to dialyze yourself on your own time.

What are the benefits of home-assisted hemodialysis?

There are numerous benefits to home-assisted hemodialysis. First, you have the freedom to determine your schedule of when you would like to receive your dialysis. You don't have to travel to an in-center location three times a week during a set time. This is ideal for patients that have a hard time getting around, travel or have hectic work schedules. Secondly, you will dialyze in the comfort and privacy of your own home. You will also have less dietary limitations. Studies have shown that patients who dialyze in their home have fewer hospital stays, better blood pressure control and are less likely to have long-term problems since they will still be in monitored by a nurse and their nephrologist. And unlike traditional in-center dialysis, you won't have one nurse or technician watching over several patients. You will have one on one time with the same nurse, every time.

What are the benefits of peritoneal dialysis?

Peritoneal dialysis patients not only enjoy all the benefits of home-assisted hemodialysis but also actually perform the dialysis themselves. Elik Dialysis trains qualified patients on how to perform peritoneal dialysis. The training takes a few weeks and allows patients the utmost freedom and control over their dialysis. Anyone can be taught; no medical background is necessary. And patients will still be monitored by a nurse and their nephrologist.

Why does Elik offer interim in-center dialysis?

While your home is getting set-up for in-home dialysis, or while you are getting trained in peritoneal dialysis, we offer interim in-center dialysis. What's unique about Elik Dialysis' in-center treatment is that our patients still enjoy the one-to-one attention that our in-home dialysis patients receive. We don't have several dialysis machines lined up with one nurse attending to all of the patients. We have one machine to one nurse.

What type of dialysis do I need?

Your nephrologist traditionally determines your dialysis need and we work with your doctor to customize a treatment regimen specific to your needs.

If I'm dialyzing at home and have a question, who do I contact?

Elik Dialysis at 844-505-7684. We have technicians that can help with equipment concerns and nurses for treatment and supplies, 24/7.

What does my home need for home dialysis?

We will have a staff member come to your home and work with you on where your in-home dialysis should take place. You'll need a power supply, water supply and an area to store a month of dialysis supplies, which takes up about 40 cubic feet in your home. It's helpful to have easy access to your supplies so bookshelves, a small closet or even drawers are ideal.

Can I afford home-assisted hemodialysis or home peritoneal dialysis?
